Breast Cancer Awareness, Prevention and Celebration
By Yvette Grant,
Public Relations Chairperson
How might two groups from completely different generations get together, create a momentous bond and share moving communication about breast cancer prevention and healing intimately in and beyond their immediate worlds? Well, just view the recently published Uplifting Cancer Survivors In The COVID Era: Expressions of Kindness and Inspiration Between Aunties and Nieces co-written by author-artist Wilhelmina Grant-Cooper and participants. Grant-Cooper crafted the inspiring, published concept of the intergenerational art project that was ignited by youth educator Lynnette White, where Brooklyn high school students [aka “nieces”] and thriving cancer survivors [aka “aunties”] exchanged inspirational reflections and designs. Both groups, challenged by the impact of added stresses and isolation due to COVID-19, were united with expressive forms of creativity through art and affirmations.
Grant-Cooper completely relates to the entire “aunties and nieces” experience because Grant-Cooper herself is a breast cancer thriving survivor for 28 years, as well as a talented artist and writer. Originating, showcasing, educating and combining restorative practices have been a significant part of Grant-Cooper’s breast health awareness contributions for the underserved. On Tuesday, October 18, 2022, The Children’s Art Carnival presented Wilhelmina Grant-Cooper’s book signing Uplifting Cancer Survivors In The COVID Era: Expressions of Kindness and Inspiration Between Aunties and Nieces event [attendees met and greeted the teen and elder contributors to the book]. The event also provided cancer prevention resources and an opportunity to engage in a fully provisioned art activity.
The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Theta Chapter Sorors Yvette Grant and Yvette Wilds [also intergenerational project producers and avid annual ACS Strides Against Breast Cancer supporters], attended the book signing affair. Each Soror was able to hold endearing conversations with the book contributors, get autographs, and be reminded of the joy and possibilities for self-care and partnerships. Soror Grant reminisces, “…the entire occasion was so informative, and captivating, that I felt like I was watching a movie with actors saying their lines; the rhythm of the real exchanges between the two groups was seamless and particularly touching. All the participants felt the authenticity of the healing process and the true value of connection.” Soror Wilds calls to mind, “Breast Cancer Awareness is not just a month, and Awareness is Power! This event was full of power, hope, strength and love. The collaboration was a beautiful way to bring awareness to women of all ages.”
